In this lesson you will learn how to make a verb negative. Here are some new verbs we will use today.

-u verbs

働く
はたらく
to work

会う
あう
to meet

住む
すむ
to live

-ru verbs

見る
みる
to see

To make -u ending verbs negative we change the -u to -a and attach -nai.

働く　→　働かない
く　→　か　＋　ない　＝　かない
はたらく　→　はたらかない

会う　→　会わない
う　→　わ　＋　ない　＝　わない
あう　→　あわない

住む　→　住まない
む　→　ま　＋　ない　＝　まない
すむ　→　すまない

To make -ru ending verbs negative we change the -ru to -nai.

見る　→　見ない
る　→　ない
みる　→　みない

Examples:

金曜に働かない。
きんようび　に　はたらかない。
I'm not going to work on Friday.

彼にもう会わない。
かれ　に　もう　あわない。
I'm not going to meet him anymore.

あそこに住まないよ。こちに住む。
あそこ　に　すまない　よ。　こち　に　すむ。
I'm not going to live there. I'm going to live here.

その番組を見ない。この番組をみる。
その　ばんぐみ　を　みない。この　ばんぐみ　を　みる。
I'm not going to see that show. I am going to see this one.
