Japanese Lesson 54: ～ます verb form -- ～ますの動詞の形態

In all the lessons previous to this lesson we have been using "regular" verb endings. This is the kind of Japanese that people speak with their friends and family. When you are talking to someone you don't know well it's best to use the -masu「～ます」ending verb form.

How to make the ～ます ending verb form:

For -u ending verbs it's a simple pattern. Delete the final u 「う」and in it's place put imasu 「います」

ku becomes → kimasu　く　→　きます
gu becomes → gimasu　ぐ　→　ぎます
su → shimasu　す　→　します
tsu →chimasu　つ　→　ちます
nu → nimasu　ぬ　→　にます
bu → bimasu　ぶ　→　びます
mu → mimasu　む　→　みます
ru → rimasu　る　→　ります

to talk

to die

to play
verb base =（遊）ぶ　→　（あそ）ぶ

to drink
