When you use the word this to describe a specific time period:

this: こん、こ、け、きょ

You may notice that all the "this" words below use the kanji 「今」. The kanji 「今」has several different readings.

Examples:

今日、友達と会った。
きょう　ともだち　と　あった。
I met my friend today.
(I met my friend on this day.)

今週はメキシコに行く。
こんしゅう　めきしこ　に　いく。
I am going to go to Mexico this week.

私の誕生日は今月です。
わたし　の　たんじょうび　は　こんげつ　です。
My birthday is this month.

今年は卒業する。
ことし　は　そつぎょう　する。
I am going to graduate this month.

今朝バナナを食べた。
けさ　ばなな　を　たべた。
I ate a banana this morning.

今夜はデートする。
こんや　は　でーと　する。
I'm going on a date tonight.
