Japanese Lesson 36: I wanted to / I didn't want to 英語の「したい」「したくない」

This lesson shows you how to put "I want" and "I don't want" into the past form. There are only 2 forms "I want" in Japanese: the present form and the past form. These two forms can be used to express other tenses as well.

For -ru and -u ending verbs, this is now you make "I want" into "I wanted" and "I don't want" into "I didn't want":

 たい → たかった

 たくない → たくなかった

For -u ending verbs it looks like this:

話す → 話したい → 話したかった
はなす → はなしたい → はなしたかった
I talk → I want to talk → I wanted to talk

話さない → 話したくない → 話したくなかった
はなさない → はなしたくない → はなしたくなかった
I don't talk → I don't want to talk → I didn't want to talk

For -ru ending verbs it looks like this:

食べる → 食べたい → 食べたかった
らべる → たべたい → たべたかった
I eat → I want to eat → I wanted to eat

食べない → 食べたくない → 食べたくなかった
たべない → たべたくない → たべたくなかた
I don't eat → I don't want to eat → I didn't want to eat
